What is watch insurance?

Although specific jewellery insurance is available for rings or other jewellery, watch insurance is usually either purchased as part of home insurance, home contents insurance, or if you wish to protect a smartwatch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker, you may choose gadget insurance.

Gadget insurance cover for watches

Gadget insurance will typically protect smart watches, Apple watches, or fitness trackers such as Fitbit. Gadget insurance is slightly different to home insurance as it generally covers repairs or replacement should your smartwatch or fitness tracker be broken, damaged, lost or stolen.

How do I insure my smartwatch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker?

You could insure your wearable technology on your home insurance or home contents insurance, however, the excess on your home insurance may be too high for your home insurance to protect your smartwatch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker economically.

Specific gadget insurance will cover your smart watch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker for repair or replacement, should it be lost, damaged, or stolen, depending on your policy.

You may also more affordably cover your smart watch for accidental damage or liquid damage with gadget insurance.

If your smartwatch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker should stop working, you may also be covered for repairs by gadget insurance.

Home insurance cover for watches

Home insurance or home contents insurance can protect your watch should it be damaged by a peril such as fire, flood, storm or escape of water.

Home insurance or home contents insurance will also protect your watch in case of theft from your home. You can also cover your watch when worn or taken outside the home on your home or home contents insurance.

How do I insure my watch on my home insurance?

Home insurance or home contents insurance will protect your watch while it is in your home, unless you arrange ‘all risks’ cover which will also offer protection when you wear your watch outside the home.

Generally, home insurance policies include a single item limit, of for example €1,000, so your watch may be valued above the single item limit for your home insurance.

There is the option on most home insurance contents policies to purchase additional cover for unspecified items on an all risks basis, which could include your watch, smartwatch, or fitness tracker. This would increase the amount you could claim by, for example €5,000, but you would still face a single item limit which may be too low to adequately protect your watch.

Specified item option

The advised option would be to insure your watch as a specified item on an all risks basis on your home contents insurance. This would mean that you would be fully protected when bringing your watch outside the home, less any excess on your policy.

Not all home insurance and home contents insurance will protect your watch from accidental damage, so it is a good idea to check this when arranging your home insurance cover.

Inside and outside cover on home contents insurance

Home contents insurance will cover your watch both in and outside your home, and the financial protection it offers will enable you to replace your watch should something unexpected happen to it.

Your watch will also be protected against loss of theft which is important since you want to wear it with confidence.

Gadget insurance is essential for smartwatches and fitness trackers as they will go everywhere with you. Most gadget insurance will cover your watch against loss or theft and also against accidental damage or liquid damage, so you can use your device without worry.

Do I need to have my watch valued?

Depending on the type of watch, you may need to have your watch valued. For a standard watch, if it is a new piece, then your purchase receipt should be sufficient to have your watch insured.

For an older, heirloom, second hand or antique watch, you may need to have the watch valued by a specialist valuer. A sentimental piece may be irreplaceable, but you may still have to have its financial value, or its new replacement value, for the purposes of including it on your home insurance.

Fluctuations in value

Bear in mind, also, that jewellery and watch values can fluctuate in value over time, so it is a good idea to have any piece valued to establish the value of the watch and to calculate its replacement value when it comes to insuring the piece.

Having the watch valued will avoid being underinsured and may, in any case, be a condition of your insurance cover. It is also a good idea to take photos of the watch and include these with any valuation.

If you wish to insure a smartwatch, Apple watch, or fitness tracker, your purchase receipt or the age and model of the device should be all you need for your insurer.
