The Company
In the late 1950’s the Irish State established a not-for-profit health insurer Voluntary Health Insurance (VHI). VHI offered private care in public hospitals for the top 15% of earners in the State who were, at the time, not entitled to public care.
VHI remained the only health insurer in Ireland until, in response to EU regulations, the Irish health insurance market was opened up in the 1990’s by the EU.
VHI now has 1,177,600 members or a 46% share of the Irish health insurance market.
VHI is a state-owned corporation who reinvests profits in providing new and enhanced services for its members.
VHI Member Benefits
VHI has increasingly moved into delivering primary and preventative healthcare for its members in recent years. These services offer rapid access for VHI members in order to avoid waiting lists and to provide an early diagnosis.
VHI aims to offer a range of medical services that are easy and quick to access and that provide convenient medical diagnosis and treatment as an alternative or compliment to conventional surgeries, clinics, and hospitals. Early diagnosis and preventative health can be key to the outcome of many conditions, especially for children.
VHI Clinics
The VHI 360 centre in Carrickmines offers a range of services for VHI members including urgent care and treatment clinics, a consultant led paediatric clinic for general and developmental paediatric concerns, and access to a range of diagnostics such as Xray, ultrasound, MRI and Dexa scan.
Their 360 Health Coach service is a preventative service focussed on health and wellbeing and the 360 clinic also offers a sports and exercise musculoskeletal clinic for members aged 12 and over.
Menopause Care
VHI 360 women’s health clinic offers specialised care to women experiencing symptoms of perimenopause and menopause should they choose to seek medical support at this time.
VHI provides a rapid access dermatology service allows members to receive a rapid diagnosis from a dermatologist for a skin condition.
VHI Swiftcare clinics also offer urgent care and diagnostics, with service available depending on location. VHI Swiftcare aims to offer illness and minor injury treatment with rapid access and no long wait, helping VHI members avoid a trip to A&E in many cases, although they are not available for cardiac concerns of children under 12 months.
VHI Online Services
Online health is also available to VHI members, depending on your plan. You can speak online to a nurse, doctor, or midwife.
Allied health services such as a dietitian, physiotherapist or speech and language therapist are also available for online consultation depending on the cover in your plan.
VHI Overseas Cover
VHI also offers overseas cover for their members abroad and will pay the hospital directly, up to €65,000 or €100,000 depending on your plan, if you require emergency medical treatment abroad.
VHI may also cover elective treatment abroad if it is recommended by an Irish consultant, whether or not the treatment is provided in an Irish hospital.
VHI international health insurance offers health insurance abroad for Irish residents living, working, or studying abroad for more than 6 months. VHI may cover treatment abroad or in Ireland, if you choose to return home for medical treatment, under this plan.
